▶ MORGAN FRY

Beautifully designed and engineered, and meticulously hand finished, Morgan, based in Leeds, produces mouthpieces as good as anything else out there, wonderfully comfortable to play. His new models , both metal and hard rubber, feature an integral built in ligature, for a more secure and free reed response.

Metal Alto

Features a classic medium chamber sound, with increased stability that using metal affords. Fantastic pieces. You still get the fat sound firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, but with more power available. Also for those of us who spend a lot of time playing on metal tenor mouthpieces, the narrower beak is more comfortable and gives you a little more flexibility of tone.

£499.

Vintage Tenor

The Morgan Fry Vintage is based on the 'Double Ring' chamber from the 1950's. The moderate baffle and large, shallow chamber give these a beautiful balance of sound. Thick and warm, but with the ability to brighten up substantially. If you're the type of player that likes to do all your gigs on one mouthpiece and you're a relatively bright player, this is a solid candidate.

£499

Hollywood Tenor.

Morgans latest model, brighter than the vintage, with a tight focussed sound, and a perfect amount of resistance. Close in feel and design to Morgan’s “Andy Sheppard” model.

£499

Super Vintage Tenor.

From Morgan Fry website –“Tons of players love the full, rich sound of the vintage large chambered pieces that all of our heroes played on back in the 1950's and 60's. But a lot of us working players find ourselves in situations where those pieces, while they sound great, don't have enough edge to get an appropriate sound for modern idioms or loud stages, or maybe just not edgy enough for your particular combination of chops and sound concept. There used to be only one solution to this problem -- more baffle. Either switch to a high baffled 'pea shooter' or put an epoxy (or wax or whatever else) baffle in your old Link. This solution gets you the edge, but it comes at a great cost to the body, warmth, and flexibility of tone available.
I started wondering if there was a better way. I began by tweaking my CAD models. I started with the classic 'double ring' design (same as my Vintage series mouthpiece), then started to play around with everything else -- Table angle, beak angle, baffle angle, facing, tip rail, etc. -- everything except the chamber. What I was able to achieve is a piece that is acoustically the same as my favourite vintage pieces, but aerodynamically much different. As a result, we have the best of both worlds -- plenty of edge and super fast response without sacrificing any of the richness of tone and full range of expression.
I call it the "Super" Vintage -- its heritage is firmly traditional, but its heart is thoroughly modern.”

The Tribute

pt-31

Phil Tone Tribute

Now In Stock But Selling Fast !

Phil-Tone Custom Woodwinds and Theo Wanne Inc. are proud to announce what we hope to be the first in a series of collaborative efforts from the great Northwest.
Aptly named “The Tribute”, this endeavour is our way of paying homage to many jazz saxophone legends as well as to a mouthpiece that holds a special place in musical history.
It began as a vast collection of vintage pieces. From this we chose the very best metal vintage Florida for analysis. Through the use of laser mapping, 3d printers, and months of trials and adjustments the goal was achieved; a piece with the richness, colour, and vibrance, of the vintage original without modernizations or added “steroids”. The Tribute can whisper or project with attitude. Always complex, always full, its versatility and precise construction opens endless avenues of musical articulation.

The Tribute will be packaged with Theo’s revolutionary Enlightened Ligature and two pressure plates.
The opening is a 7* (.105)

The Mosaic

Mosiac

Phil-Tone 'Mosaic' Metal Tenor Mouthpiece. Another collaboration from Phil Tone and Theo Wanne, this is the "brother" of the Tribute, looking identical, apart from the name.
Phil and Theo used the best vintage Dukoff "stubby" for analysis. Through the use of laser mapping, 3d printers, and months of trials and adjustments the goal was achieved; a piece with the richness, colour, and vibrance, of the vintage original without modernizations or added “steroids”.
The Mosaic can whisper or project. Complex, full and vibrant, with a little more "buzz" and "wetness" than the Tribute, equally great, offering a slightly different tonal option. Think Dexter Gordon.

Rift Alto Mouthpiece

Rift

Phil has made some modifications to his Rift alto piece.

The Rift offers more than just sheer power. It is power with purpose, complexity and integrity. With a sweeping dynamic range and formidable projection it cuts through space without becoming shallow or thin. Its voice will not be silenced.
The Rift supports a unique combination of mouthpiece design elements. It utilises bore modifications with a rollover baffle and a special secondary baffle in the floor. This facilitates highs that are crisp and a deeply resonant low end. With its rich focused core the Rift is an easy to blow, but does offer some cushion to provide excellent control. The Rift is a versatile mouthpiece for those seeking additional power, and dynamics. This is one of the most colourful alto pieces in existence. Even the palm keys, which are too frequently thin, have texture and colour.

Phil Tone Sapphire

sapphire_ten

Now available in the UK, is the much anticipated Sapphire Hard Rubber tenor mouthpiece. This is based on (but not a copy of) an Early Babbit Link HR piece. There is a lot of excited talk about these, and quite rightly so, they are truly a beautiful mouthpiece, with a warm, fat core sound, capable of being pushed to produce plenty of volume without thinning out. Various tip openings, but dont hang around, there's a lot of interest !

£299.00

Phil Tone Solstice Alto

solsticeWeb1
This mouthpiece marks a departure from the traditional jazz alto setup. The Solstice harkens to the days of the ”West Coast” school of sound, made famous by such greats as Art Pepper, Lee Konitz, and Paul Desmond. The sounds and styles of these greats inspired the creation of this mouthpiece. The Solstice has a rich core and a full harmonic palate, while also possessing a lively and lyrical quality. There have been several modern attempts to approach the West Coast sound but the majority leave the player with a stuffy, dull, and resistant piece. The Solstice plays open, full, and with ease. Its ringing, centred tone provides a unique avenue towards expression and opens the door to new possibilities. From flowing bossa novas, to the jazz quartet standards, to a beautiful, lyrical, emotional ballad…the Solstice does it all.

Phil Tone Intrepid

Phil’s new offering to tenor players is now available in the UK, via South Wales Woodwind. It looks a lot like the Sapphire, but a lot of new things are going on. Based on an Otto Link Reso Chamber, it features a flat angled step baffle. This gives a big bold and colourful tone with texture and a great buzz.  A huge dark core to the sound, yet paradoxically it can be bright, with loads of projection. The window is longer than in Links and the Sapphire. There is a lot of hand work in this piece. The Intrepid is vibrant, powerful and projects, while maintaining a balanced buzz and warmth through the range. A truly wonderful mouthpiece for discerning players.
